Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is GoPuzzler?
GoPuzzler is an old-school browser puzzle in which nearly anything can be a clue. Images, sounds, filenames, page titles, URLs and even apparent mistakes may matter. There is no timer. Take your time and enjoy the moment when something finally clicks.
Q: Is this Notpron?
No. GoPuzzler is an independent, fan-made browser riddle inspired by Notpron and the wonderfully strange era of source-code web puzzles. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Notpron (though it starts off heavily inspired by for the first bit there!). This is a loving tribute built around original levels, bad ideas, and terrible decisions.
Q: What am I supposed to do?
Each level leads to the next one. Exactly how it does that is for you to discover. You may need to find a username and password, change part of a URL, locate a hidden link or interpret an answer as a filename.
Not every level works the same way.
Q: Is viewing the source code cheating?
Absolutely not. If anything, ignoring it may be cheating yourself.
Q: What am I allowed to use?
Search engines, maps, dictionaries, image editors, audio tools, metadata readers, pencil and paper, and whatever else helps you investigate are all fair game. Some levels require research (the ones with a google box specifically); others require you to stop researching and notice what is already in front of you.
Q: What should I not do?
Please do not attack the website, brute-force passwords, crawl every possible filename or search through the site’s hosting repository. Exploring pages and files that a clue reasonably points toward is part of the game. Trying every door with a battering ram is not.
Q: Do I need special software?
Not immediately. Later levels may benefit from free image, audio or metadata tools. If a level seems to be suggesting a particular kind of inspection, it probably is.
Q: Can I play on my phone?
A desktop or laptop is strongly recommended. Several levels rely on features such as page source, keyboard controls, image manipulation, audio inspection or printing that may be difficult—or impossible—to use properly on a phone.
Q: I think I have the answer. Where do I enter it?
That depends on the level. Look for something clickable, consider whether the answer belongs in the address bar, and remember that usernames, passwords, URLs and file extensions are always lower case.
Q: What should I do when I’m stuck?
Step away for a while. Then return and inspect the title, image, audio, URL, filename and source code again. Write down what you know instead of repeatedly guessing.
Q: I entered the correct answer, but it still doesn’t work.
First, are you sure? If so, Check spelling, capitalization, spaces and file extensions. Try refreshing the page or opening it in a private window. Browser caching and saved login information occasionally behave like bonus puzzles, but they are not intended to be.
Q: I think something is genuinely broken.
Please use the private problem report form. Include the level number, your browser and device, what you expected to happen, and what happened instead. If the form itself is not working, email reports@gopuzzler.com. Avoid including the answer in a public message; private reports may include whatever detail is necessary to diagnose the problem.
Q: Can I share solutions?
Please share GoPuzzler freely, but avoid posting unmarked answers, passwords or revealing screenshots. Use spoiler tags where available and give other players the opportunity to experience the discovery themselves.
Q: How do I save my progress?
Bookmark the page you have reached. Your current URL is effectively your save file.
Q: Why does the website look like this?
The web used to be haunted.
Some of us miss that.
